Always wanted to learn the saxophone?
Maybe you've always liked the sound of the saxophone but never got around to learning.
Maybe you've reached a point in life where you'd like to take up something new.
Or perhaps you've finally decided that "one day" is going to be now.
If you're an adult with little or no musical experience, these lessons are designed for you.
I started learning saxophone as an adult myself, so I know what it's like to pick up the instrument without years of musical experience behind you.
Who are these lessons for?
These lessons are specifically for adult absolute beginners, particularly those who are starting later in life.
You might be:
In your 40s, 50s, 60s or beyond
Someone who has never played an instrument before
Someone who has always wanted to play saxophone
Someone looking for a new hobby
Someone who has recently bought their first saxophone
Someone who wants to learn at their own pace without pressure
You can simply learn because you want to play.
What to expect at your first lesson
Your first lesson isn't about being tested or expected to know anything. You're starting from the beginning — and that's exactly what we'll do.
We'll take some time to get to know each other and talk about what you'd like to get from learning the saxophone.
Then we'll get to know your instrument.
Getting to know your saxophone
If you already have a saxophone, we'll take a look at it together.
We'll cover things like:
The different parts of the saxophone
How to safely assemble and hold it
How to fit the mouthpiece and reed
How to put the instrument away properly
Basic cleaning and care
As I'm also a trained saxophone repair technician, I'll check that your instrument is in suitable playing condition and help you understand the basics of looking after it.
Making your first sound
Then comes the exciting part — making your first sound!
We'll work through the basics of producing a note without worrying about playing a tune straight away.
It may take a little time to get a good sound, and that's completely normal.
From there, we'll gradually introduce your first notes and start putting them together.
No pressure, no prior experience
You don't need to read music.
You don't need to know the names of the keys.
You don't need to have played another instrument.
And you certainly don't need to be able to play a song on your first day!
We'll work at a pace that you're comfortable with.
What will you learn?
As you progress, we'll cover:
Producing a clear, consistent sound
Breathing and embouchure basics
Your first notes and scales
Simple rhythms
Reading basic music
Playing simple melodies
Developing an effective practice routine
Cleaning and maintaining your saxophone
Choosing reeds and basic accessories
The aim is to give you the skills and confidence to practice between lessons and gradually become comfortable playing on your own.

That's okay.
If you're thinking about buying your first saxophone, I'd recommend getting some advice before you buy.
There are many different instruments available, particularly on the second-hand market, and not every apparently good bargain is necessarily a good beginner instrument.
As a trained saxophone repair technician, I can give you general guidance on what to look for when choosing an instrument.
30-minute adult beginner lessons
30-minute lesson — £15
Lessons take place at my home-based workshop in Shipley, West Yorkshire.
Lessons are booked and paid for in advance. Payments can be made by bank transfer or cash before the lesson.
Your first lesson will start with the absolute basics, so there's no expectation that you should already know anything.
Cancellation policy
I understand that things sometimes come up. If you need to cancel or rearrange a lesson, please give at least 24 hours' notice whenever possible.
Lessons cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice may be charged in full, as the time has been reserved specifically for you.
